What You Can Do To Make Gainesville a Better Place to Ride

Ride your bike to work, school, and recreational activities.
Lead by example.  Show it can be done.  Others will follow.

Educate your peers about bicycle commuting and exercise.  Ask them questions, don't tell them what to do.  Instead of "Why don't you ride your bike to work?" say "What would make it easier for you to ride your bike to work?"

Invite experienced instructors and advocates to your workplace, classroom, or other home to help your peers get into cycling.  BikeGainesville is happy to find advocates or speakers for you.

Ask your local politicians and commissioners what they are doing to facilitate cycling, and how you can help.  Most Gainesville commissioners and bureaucrats support bicycle-friendly development and reconstruction, they just need our vocal help and support in getting legislation passed to achieve it.

Co-write letters, or hold meetings with officials, to address problem intersections, lanes, or thoroughfares.  The local Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Board is a great venue for addressing concerns about particular neighborhoods or streets.  They need your support and your voice.

Commit your family, neighbors, and friends to cycling through ride pools, sharing responsibilities, and running errands for one another.  There is no reason for  Don, Mary, and Julie to take three bicycle trips to the store if the total of what you all need can fit into one backpack or saddlebag.  This kind of collective activity is what we need to revitalize our neighborhoods, and the bicycle can play a big role.

Get your friends and peers to visit BikeGainesville.org to introduce them to resources that will help them ride.  Knowing there is a larger community of activism and interest gives people confidence to change their driving habits.
